Wesmen wrestlers shine

THE University of Winnipeg Wesmen wrestlers are coming home from the 2013 CIS Wrestling Championships a little heavier, thanks to some new hardware around their necks. Briston Brenton clinched a gold medal - his sixth of the season -- in his 82-kilogram weight class with a victory over Alberta's Jamie Yurick. Teammate Jake Miller earned a silver medal after falling to Brock University's Matrixx Ferreiro in the 76-kilogram final.

Missed it by that much

WINNIPEG speed skater Tyler Derraugh came within a heartbeat of his first World Cup medal over the weekend, when he turned in a fifth-place finish in the 1,000 metre long track at the Essent ISU World Cup in Erfurt, Germany. It took Derraugh, who currently trains in Calgary, one minute and 10.19 seconds to cross the finish line. That was only one one-hundredth of a second away from a medal position.

Rebels run wild

RED River College's basketball teams shone at the weekend's Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference championships, with both the men's and women's squads dispatching the University of Winnipeg College Wesmen to earn the top title. The men's team won 72-56, while the women's team came from behind to win 69-65. This is the fifth straight year the Red River Rebels men have won the championship, and the second year for the women's team.
