Pischke honoured as Canada West's best

UNIVERSITY of Manitoba volleyball player Dane Pischke was named the Canada West male athlete of the week for last week.

Pischke had 24 kills, 37 digs, five blocks, three assists, one service ace and 37.5 total points during a road sweep of third-ranked Trinity Western last weekend.

Pischke started and played in all 10 sets.

Pischke is the first University of Manitoba male athlete to earn conference honours during the 2012-13 season. His sister, Taylor Pischke, was previously named female conference athlete of the week in November.

Pischke was also named the Smitty's Bison Sports male athlete of the week. The Bison female athlete of the week was goaltender Dee-Ana Marion.

Marion was named first star with a 34-save performance in a 1-0 loss to the Calgary Dinos last Saturday. Marion also had 20 saves in a 5-2 loss in Calgary the night before.

Marion has a 2.09 GAA this season, fifth in Canada West.

Winnipeg natives Nic Demski and Jordan Medal are among the Canadians who've been named to the 2013 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) World team.

A total of 26 Canadians were named to the World team that will take on the U.S. in the fourth annual International Bowl.

Demski is a running back at the University of Manitoba, while Medal is an offensive lineman at McGill who previously represented Manitoba in 2010 and 2011 Under-18 competition.

Kelvin's Michelle Perron and Miles Macdonell's Robin Thiessen are last week's WWHSHL players of the week.

Perron had an assist and the game-winner in a 3-0 CTV Division A win over the PCI Saints, while Thiessen earned the shutout in a 6-0 Free Press Division B win over the St. Norbert Celtics.

Winkler's Tristan Keck was last week's MJHL player of the week.

A 17-year-old rookie, Keck had six goals an four assists in four games, including a hat trick in a win over Neepawa.

Volleyball players Ellina Domnidou and Thomas Douglas-Powell are the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Pizza Hotline players of the week.

Domnidou had 66 assists, five blocks and four digs from the setter position in a two-match sweep of the Saskatchewan Huskies last weekend.

Douglas-Powell had 32 kills, 15 digs, five blocks and two services aces in a weekend split with the Huskies.

Southwest's Cameron Whyte and Winnipeg's Liam Kroeker were the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League players of the week for last week.

Whyte had a seven-point weekend, scoring twice and notching an assist in a 4-3 Cougars loss to the Winnipeg Wild on Saturday and then scoring once and adding three assists in a 5-3 win over the Kenora Thistles on Sunday.

Kroeker had the short-handed game-winner in that Wild victory over Southwest and then set up the overtime game-winner on Sunday in a 4-3 win over the Yellowhead Chiefs.
