Prized recruit brings three teammates to Dobie's Herd

NEWLY committed quarterback Jordan Yantz has started a stampede to the Herd.

Yantz, who will join coach Brian Dobie's University of Manitoba Bisons football team for spring camp and the 2013 season, is bringing three Vancouver Island Raiders teammates with him.

The Nanaimo Daily News reported receivers Matthew Sawyer and Dustin Pedersen, who were the Raiders' leaders in touchdowns scored, and defensive back Tremaine Apperley have also committed to the Bisons.

"We're on the same page after spending four years together, with another two years, hopefully we'll get that much better," Pedersen told the Daily News.

Schick tops in female midget loop

EASTMAN Selects defenceman Brittani Schick is the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League's player of the week. A native of Stonewall, she recorded three goals and an assist in two Selects victories last weekend.

Medal haul for local fencers

MANITOBA fencing athletes brought home five medals from the Canada Cup in Kingston, Ont., last weekend.

Cameron MacKay earned gold in the cadet men's sabre and a bronze in junior men's sabre. Daria Jorquera Palmer won gold in senior women's epee, André Lavoie won gold in under-15 men's sabre and Misha Sweet took silver in cadet men's foil.

Yellowhead's Friesen honoured

BRETT FRIESEN, 15, of the Yellowhead Chiefs was selected as the Century 21 goaltender of the month after he posted wins in four of his six starts and lost another in overtime during the month. Friesen, a native of Carberry, also broke the single-season record for wins by a Yellowhead goalie with his 17th victory.

Big week for Norman's Barron

FORWARD Brendan Barron of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League's Norman Northstars has been named the offensive player of the month for January. A native of Creighton, Sask., he scored five goals and added 13 assists during the month and is tied for seventh overall in league scoring with 22 goals and 33 assists.

The defensive player of the month is Carter McMurdo of the Brandon Wheat Kings, who scored two goals and added four assists to help the Wheat Kings win eight of their 11 games.

Domnidou, Wesley lead Wesmen

UNIVERSITY of Winnipeg women's volleyball player Ellina Domnidou and men's basketball player Steven Wesley have been chosen as the Lea Marc Printing Solutions Wesmen athletes of the month for January.

Domnidou, a second-year setter/outside hitter, helped her team remain in the race for a Canada West playoff spot. Playing in the setter position, she had 163 assists (27 per match), 33 digs and four service aces in the team's six matches played. Wesley, a fourth-year forward, helped his team earn three important wins during the month. In six games, Wesley shot 60 per cent from the field and scored 123 points (20.5 ppg) and had 47 rebounds.

Nats tab Bustos, Gonzales-Froese

MANITOBA soccer players Marco Bustos and Kianz Gonzales-Froese have been invited to the national male under-17 team camp in Sunrise, Fla., and Costa Rica from Feb. 5 to 15.

The two players are part of a 20-player roster that will train for five days in Florida before heading to Costa Rica for a pair of friendly matches against a team from Costa Rica on Feb. 12 and Feb. 14.
