THE MVP award at the Brandon Sun Spartan Invitational was good enough for Tynan Reyes of the Garden City Fighting Gophers to capture Home Run Sports Urban High School athlete of the week honours.
The 6-6 post averaged 26 points and 13 rebounds per game at the tournament. He hit for 39 points and 19 rebounds in the championship game.
Reyes, a Grade 12 student, maintains an 80 per cent average.
Morden Thunder hockey forward Phoenix McElroy-Scott is the Tri-Star Rural High School athlete of the week.
McElroy-Scott led the Thunder to three straight wins last week, scoring seven goals and nine points in the process.
His efforts included hat tricks in the first two tournament games and the game-winner in the third.
The Grade 11 student also particpates in volleyball and badminton while maintaining a 78 per cent average.
Big week for Kirkup
A seven-point week has earned Westman Wildcats forward Karissa Kirkup the Selkirk Keystone Source for Sports-Reebok Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League player of the week award.
Kirkup had one goal and six assists as her team won all three games last week, moving into second place in the MFMHL standings.
The Grade 12 student at Virden, Kirkup is the team's captain and leading scorer with 46 points in 27 games.
Earlier this season, Kirkup was a member of Team Manitoba at the Hockey Canada under-18 national championships in Dawson Creek, B.C., winning a silver medal.
Whyte leads Cougars
A four-game points streak helping his team to five victories in a row has made Cameron Whyte the selection as the Chicken Chef West Division player of the week in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League.
Whyte's Southwest Cougars moved higher in the standings and into an eighth-place tie with the streaks.
Whyte, the 17-year-old from Virden, had goals against the Winnipeg Wild and Interlake Lightning last week and now leads the Cougars in scoring with 12 goals and 33 points this season.
In the Dekalb East Division, the Wild's Bradley Reichardt is the player of the week.
The 17-year-old defenceman is one of three returnees to the team this season. Reichardt had a goal and five assists over the week.
