Ridley winners excel in ability, academics

A group of 19 members of the University of Manitoba Bisons men's and women's hockey teams were presented with the 2012-13 Mike Ridley Awards on Wednesday in recognition of excellence in athletic ability, academics and leadership.
The Mike Ridley Awards were established in the 2003-04 season as an endowment fund for the University of Manitoba.
Ridley was a Bisons player in 1983-85 and went on to a 12-year NHL career before playing his final professional season with the Manitoba Moose.
The male players who each received $750 included Luke Cain, Joe Caligiuri, Del Cowan, Dane Crowley, Jesse Deckert, Tyler Dittmer, Deven Dubyk, Ian Duval, James Henry, Brandon Lockerby, Matthew Lowry, Blair Macaulay, Brendan Rowinski, Jeremy Schappert and Craig Scott. The women's team members receiving $650 awards included Kristin Cockerill, Nellie Minshull, Maggie Litchfield-Medd and Kayleigh Wiens.
Weekly high school stars
THE Manitoba High Schools Athletics Association athletes of the week are Keith Appah of the Portage Trojans basketball team, the Home Run Sports urban high school athlete, and Raymond Hiebert of the Ste. Anne Lynx basketball team, the Tri-Star rural high school athlete.
Appah, a 6-2 guard is the Trojans leader on the court, averaging 25 points per game.
Hiebert, a 6-4 forward, is averaging 30 points, five assists, six blocks and 12 rebounds per game. He's helped lead his team to a second- and third-place finishes in the tournaments they have played in this year.
