YELLOWHEAD Chiefs rookie Taylor Sanheim, Southwest Cougars alternate captain Jordan Greig and Brandon Wheat Kings goaltender Justin Holder have been named the players of the month by the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League.
Sanheim has been named the WHL offensive player after the 15-year-old led the Chiefs in scoring during November with 15 points (10 goals and five assists) and had a plus-4 rating.
During the month, he factored into half of his team's goals. So far this season, he has been in on almost 42 per cent of his team's goals.
Greig was selected as the Meyers Norris Penny defensive player after the scored 12 points (two goals and 10 assists) in eight games. The 17-year-old is fourth in league scoring among defenceman with seven goals and 14 assists.
Holder, 16, was named the Century 21 goaltender of the month after he recorded victories in five of the six games he played in November. During the month, he posted a 2.83 goals-against-average and a save percentage of .920. His only loss was to Winnipeg Thrashers, his first in his last 10 games.
Walker, Cockerill bag scholarships
Fifth-year forward Jared Walker of Winnipeg and third-year forward Kristen Cockerill of Selkirk, members of the University of Manitoba men's and women's hockey teams, have been selected the 2011 winners of the $1,000 Sam Fabro Scholarships presented by the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame. The scholarships are awarded annually to a male and a female hockey player at the university.
The awards are named for Fabro, who was the first chairman of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame and played for the 1941 Memorial Cup champion Winnipeg Rangers.
Sears and Stubler top Wesmen athletes
Fifth-year middle Lauren Sears and third-year outside hitter Matthew Stubler have been named the University of Winnipeg Wesmen-Lea Marc Printing Solutions athletes of the month for November.
Sears leads the Canada West women's conference in service aces with 21. Stubler was the Wesmen men's team's leader in kills in three matches last month.
