Saunders going for racquetball gold today
JENNIFER Saunders of Winnipeg won her semifinal match Monday at the 16th International Racquetball Federation World Championship in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and will play for gold today. Saunders defeated American Cheryl Gudinas, 6-15, 15-13, 11-5.
Saunders and Gudinas have a rivalry dating back to the final of the 2002 World Championships, which Gudinas won.
"It's special," Saunders said in a press release. "When I made it the first time I thought I'd be in many more. It's a great opportunity after ten years."
Key to the victory was "staying calm, and hanging in there" after losing the first game. "I've lost the first game of a match before," said Saunders, "and come back to win. One game didn't mean anything."
Saunders faces Paola Longoria of Mexico in the final.
