Scholarships for Mangin, Rooney, Enns and Mandryk

THE Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association announced four recipients of the 2011-12 Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Volleyball Scholarships.

Libero/setter Kalene Mangin of the St. Claude Olympiens, middle Kenny Rooney of College Jeannne-Sauvé Olympiens, Kieran Enns of Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna and setter Madelyn Mandryk of the St. Mary's Academy Flames were announced at a press conference on Wednesday.

The awards are named in honour of Iwanoczko, a Selkirk resident who was a five-time all-Canadian volleyball player from the University of Manitoba who died at the age of 30 in 1998 of Hodgkin's disease.

The awards of $750 are presented annually to four students with a minimum 65 per cent academic average who will be pursuing a post-secondary education and have shown excellence in volleyball and community activities.

Morden, Winker get Games

THE town of Morden, the city of Winkler and the rural municipality of Stanley have been selected as the host communities for the 2014 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games on March 3-9, 2014.

The 2014 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games will include the sporting events include badminton, cross country skiing, figure skating, curling, artistic gymnastics, hockey, ringette, swimming, and Special Olympics curling. It is expected there will be about 1,500 participants and 2,000 volunteers involved in the event.

Wesmen earn wild card

HEAD coach Tanya McKay's University of Winnipeg women's basketball team (9-11) has earned the sole wild-card berth into the Canada West conference playoffs. The Wesmen had the next best record outside of the four playoff berths in the Prairie Division and three playoff berths in the Pacific Division.

The Wesmen will meet the No. 1-ranked Regina Cougars (20-0) in Regina in a best-of-three quarter-final series on Friday and Saturday and, if necessary, Sunday.

Regina posted the first perfect conference record in program history and has won 23 straight games overall.

Duff in must-win situation

JUSTIN DUFF of Winnipeg and his professional men's volleyball team Arkas Spor Izmir of Turkey is facing a must-win match next week in the Champions League men's volleyball playoffs. The Champions League is a three-month tournament that determined the top professional volleyball team in Europe.

Duff, a member of Canada's national men's volleyball team, recorded six points as his Turkish club lost its opening round-of-six playoff match on Wednesday to Russia's Novosibirsk 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 before more than 2,500 spectators in the Siberian city. Izmir is 13-3 and third overall in the Turkish League and was 7-1 in Champions League play prior to the match against Novosibirsk.

Game 2 of the total point series is in Izmir on March 1.

Railcats second in Quebec

WINNIPEG East Railcats peewee boys' hockey team (age 12) placed second at the 53rd Quebec International Peewee Hockey Tournament last weekend in Quebec City.

The Railcats, coached by Grant Ostir who played in and won the tournament in 1983, were defeated 2-0 by the Hershey Bears from Pennsylvania on Feb. 20.
