Athletes of the week

The Home Run Sports Urban Athlete of the Week is Jordan Hardy of the Neelin Spartan varsity girls volleyball team.

This 5-8 left side helped lead the Spartans to the championship at the Top 8 Debate tournament in Brandon, recording eight kills in the final. Coach Kevin Neufeld states, "Jordan is an extremely hard worker, with a passion for getting stronger. She competed in two triathlons this summer as part of her training program".

This Grade 12 student maintains a 91 per cent average and also competes in basketball and badminton.

The Tri-Star Rural High School Athlete of the Week is Easton Gryba of the Grandview Spartans varsity girls volleyball team.

This 5-9 left side helped lead her Spartans team to a third- place finish at the Rivers Rams Invitational. She was the Spartans' leading scorer with a kill percentage of 60 and earning points on 85 per cent of her serves. Coach Chris Porter states, "Easton has taken a co-captain role with the team, which lost four starters to graduation from last year. Coming off knee surgery, she is driven to be one of the best players in the province and does not use her injury as an excuse. She is one of the hardest-working girls on the team and hates to fail at anything. Her attitude and competitiveness are rubbing off on the new players on our team and she helps them in any way she can".

This Grade 12 student maintains an 85 per cent average.

The First AAA/AAAA junior varsity rankings came out this week, with the Lord Selkirk Royals girls and Steinbach Regional Sabres getting off to strong starts to claim the initial No. 1 spot. In varsity action, both the River East girls and boys teams climbed into the rankings. Otherwise, there was very little movement from the previous week.
