Tachinski runs peewee competition into the ground

VICTORIA TACHINSKI was a quadruple winner Saturday at the Manitoba Indoor Games, held at the Max Bell Fieldhouse.Tachinski, of Stride Ahead Tough Track, competed in the peewee (age 9-10) category, winning the 60 metres and 200 metres and setting a meet record in the 600-metres with a time of 2:03.53, surpassing the previous mark of 2:04.20. In addition, Victoria teamed with her twin sister Kennedy and Sadie McTavish on the SATT 4x200-metre relay team that won gold. Victoria ran two legs of the relay as the team was short a runner.

"I have been in track since Grade 1 at Whyte Ridge Elementary School, where I got my first bronze medal against grade threes," said Tachinski. "I ran in the two-kilometre Run at the Ridge. It was the shortest race I could enter."

Victoria, a nine-year-old Grade 4 student, says she likes to run both distance and sprints, but likes the 600 best. "I train twice a week at my school."

"Kennedy and her are both with SATT," said her mother, Christine Kuluk, adding they also play ringette, soccer and basketball in the community. "We are quite a sports family, but Victoria definitely has a passion, as well as Kennedy, for track and field. Her younger brothers Xander and Jackson do the Run at the Ridge too."

Chantal Grant, the provincial record holder in the midget 100 and 200 metres, juvenile 100 and 200 and the midget and juvenile indoor 60 metres, also did what she does best, winning both her open events. The Winnipeg Optimist Athletics sprinter won the 60-metres and the 200.

Other Manitobans with double wins were Garth Suppes of the University of Manitoba and Zachery Bailey of SATT. Suppes won the men's open shot put and the weight throw while Bailey won the peewee boys 60 metres and 200 metres.
