Top of the class in the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association

It's a mission, it's a motto and it's been gold for the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association for 50 years.

As the MHSAA celebrates its golden anniversary, the mantra of "High School Sports -- the Other Half of Education" continues to drive the association.

Founded in April, 1962, the MHSAA has grown to include 192 member schools with about 37,000 student-athletes participating and 2,500 teacher coaches volunteering their time.

As part of its celebrations, the MHSAA named female and male Athletes of the Half Century, honouring Tammy Mahon and Rick Watts at a press conference on Friday at the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.

"We invited nominations from the public and schools and a committee narrowed it down to four in each gender," said Morris Glimcher the MHSAA excecutive director. "A media panel voted on the ultimate winners, although they are all winners and outstanding individuals."

Glimcher said part of the MHSAA's mission is for athletics and academics to complement each other.

Both Watts and Mahon went on to post-secondary studies and played university-level sports while achieving their degrees.

"After 37 years as executive director, I truly believe that high school athletics are indeed the other half of education," Glimcher said.
