Torfason puts hammerlock on MVP

AISLYNN TORFASON of Winnipeg, a "freshman sensation" for the Lakehead University Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay, Ont., won the gold medal in the women's 59 kilogram division Brock Open wrestling tournament on Saturday and was named most valuable player of the meet.

Torfason is the first female wrestler from Manitoba to compete in Canadian Interuniversity Sport wrestling on a scholarship since the local program was folded five years ago. Torfason was a member of a three-member female team from Lakehead that placed third overall.

Locally, at the 2009 Kelvin Open wrestling meet at Kelvin High School, 13-year-old Caleb Rutner of the Winnipeg Wrestling Club was named meet MVP in the high school boys division even though he is a Grade 8 student at River Heights.

Rutner, who competed in the 58 kilogram division, won the gold medal in the junior high school boys division, as well as gold in the high school boys category and in the Greco Roman Wrestling category, where he competed in the 60 kg division.

Matt Lind of Winnipeg, 18, was named the MVP in the adult/open division after the grade 12 student from Kelvin High School earned two gold medals.

Lind, who competed in the 90 kg division in the adult category, won the gold medal in the adult/open category and won gold in the high school boys category in the 85 kg division.
