Winnipeg diver Geyson hit by car in Shanghai
WINNIPEG'S Kevin Geyson, a member of the Canadian diving team, is recovering in a Chinese hospital after being hit by a car on Saturday night.
Geyson, who is in Shanghai competing at the FINA World Aquatic championships, was crossing a street to catch a bus to the meet's venue when he was struck by a vehicle.
"It was scary," Diving Canada spokesman Samuel Larochella told The Canadian Press. "But the news is good. He is awake, he is alert and doesn't have any big injuries."
Geyson had left the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center on a bus when he decided to return to the venue. When he got off and attempted to cross the street to catch a different bus, he was hit, leaving him with deep cuts on one of his knees.
"The local doctors and the Canadian doctors were there when he got to the hospital," said Larochella, who added that Geyson has since spoken with his mother in Winnipeg.
Geyson's father Rick said Sunday in a telephone interview that their conversation was short. "It was basically about how he was doing and feeling. He was pretty groggy, because he had been given pain medication, but he seemed relatively upbeat."
Geyson said that his son "is pretty bruised and banged up, but at this point they have ruled out anything serious. We don't know too much more, but my wife Sharon is heading over there (Monday) to be with him until he can return home."
Larochella speculated that Geyson would probably have to stay at the (hospital) for a week, and said there would be someone from the Canadian team with him all the time."
Geyson and partner Eric Sehn of Edmonton finished eighth in the 10-metre synchro event last Sunday.
They needed a top-three finish to earn an early Olympic qualifying spot for Canada, and their next opportunity will be in February at the FINA World Cup where they will need a top-eight.
