F1 drivers Massa, Hamilton, Alonso will have eye on soccer when World Cup begins

MONTREAL - Formula One driver Felipe Massa will be watching closely when the World Cup starts June 12 in his native Brazil.

"I love football," the veteran Williams driver said Thursday at the Canadian Grand Prix. "I watch everything.

"I really hope that Brazil can be there in the final. To win the championship at home would be fantastic. So I'll be watching and supporting Brazil."

Brazil kicks off the World Cup against Croatia, while the big match the following day has Spain against the Netherlands. That will have Ferrari ace Fernando Alonso's attention.

"I'm very excited," the two-time F1 champion said. "Spain has been very strong in the Euro and the World Cup.

"It's difficult to win because there's always ups and downs and you can't always be up. But they've made the whole country so happy in recent years. There will be a lot of expectations and hopefully they will make us happy again."

Mercedes driver and England supporter Lewis Hamilton said he will try to get to Brazil to see a game. The English open the tournament June 14 against Italy.

"I love going to Brazil, so the dream would be to go watch Brazil and England play," said Hamilton. "That would be pretty awesome."

To do that, England would have to get through Group D with Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica, which won't be easy.

Fellow Briton Jenson Button of the McLaren team will also be watching.

"I'm not actually a football fan. I don't support a team, but when it comes to nationalities and countries playing, yeah, obviously I'll be supporting England," he said.

Uruguay, which opens against Costa Rica, has a fan in Sauber driver Adrian Sutil, who is listed as German.

"I'll be cheering for Uruguay and Germany, because I'm half Uruguayan," he said.

The only dissenter was Caterham driver Kamui Kobayashi, who is apparently not a fan of the beautiful game.

"I don't really care," he said. "What I know is Japan is not really strong, so I don't follow at all."

So the Japanese will open the World Cup without his support on June 14 against Ivory Coast.
