Richert will rev it up with VW for second season

WINNIPEG race car driver David Richert has earned a spot racing for Volkswagen this season in the 2009 Jetta TDI Cup.

More than 3,900 drivers from across Mexico, Canada and the United States applied to compete in the world's only clean diesel-powered race series. Approximately 100 finalists were then invited to attend a four-day tryout at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., with only 30 spots up for grabs.

Richert made the cut and will be competing in the Jetta TDI Cup for a second straight season. The 2009 schedule will see the series visit many of the continent's best race tracks, including Mosport International Raceway outside of Toronto. Richert will also have the opportunity to race in front of big names such as famed IndyCar owners Roger Penske and Chip Ganassi.

Partnering with Richert this season are notable companies such as Winnipeg Free Press, Wallace & Wallace Fences, Rainbow Trailers, Onext Media and Sunrize Group.

The first race of the season is April 26 at Virginia International Raceway.
