Fish suffer a capital pounding

Pitcher Karl Gélinas tossed a complete-game victory and allowed only five hits to lead the Les Capitales de Québec (42-20) of the Can-Am League to a 6-2 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (37-25) on Tuesday in the first of a three-game set in inter-league play between the two Canadian teams.

The two teams will play again tonight at 7 with Winnipeg’s Ace Walker (5-2, 2.89) and Québec’s John Mariotti (8-1, 4.56) expected to take the mound. The final game in the three-game series is Thursday at noon.

Québec scored four runs in the top of the third inning off Winnipeg’s starting pitcher Todd Privett – a pair of two-RBI singles by centre-fielder Sebastien Boucher and right-fielder Steve Brown – to take a 4-0 lead.

The Goldeyes led off the bottom of the fourth inning with back-to-back doubles by centre-fielder Chris Roberson and first baseman Yurendell de Caster. De Caster drove in Roberson and de Caster scored on a wild pitch to put the Goldeyes on the board trailing 4-2.

Shortstop Jeff Helps, who went 3-for-5, gave Québec a 5-2 lead scoring a run in the top of the fifth inning while designated hitter Rony Rodriguez belted a home run over the left-field wall in the top of the eighth to cap the scoring at 6-2.

Goldeyes right-fielder Josh Mazzola saw his 19-game hitting streak come to an end.
