The well-rested Winnipeg Goldeyes (18-11) kicked off their 10-game road trip with a 4-1 loss to the Can-Am League’s New Jersey Jackals (13-9) at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls, N.J., Tuesday.
After three days off due to two rained out home games and a travel day, the Fish struggled to get anything going against Jackals pitcher Gabriel Perez, who struck out five Fish batters and allowed just one hit in seven innings of work.
Goldeyes pitcher Chris Salamida took the loss. He went seven innings, allowing one walk and recording six strikeouts while being tagged for four runs.
A Jake Blackwood double that scored Casey Haerther in the ninth inning was the only run the Goldeyes produced.
The Jackals struck early, with two solo home runs in the opening inning. They scored singles in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Goldeyes continue their series against the Jackals with games today and Thursday before travelling to Quebec for a three-game series against the Capitales, followed by a four-game set against the Trois-Rivieres Aigles.
