Goldeyes acquire Coles, Allen
The Winnipeg Goldeyes have acquired outfielder Mike Coles from the Gary SouthShore RailCats along with right-handed pitcher Chris Allen in exchange for relief pitcher Dexter Carter and a player to be named later.
The Goldeyes will have Coles, 29, available for tonight's game at 7 p.m. against the Sioux Falls Pheasants, the first in a six-game home stand at Shaw Park.
In addition to that deal, Goldeyes manager Rick Forney has placed right-handed pitcher Craig James and left-handed pitcher Chris Zbin on irrevocable waivers for the purpose of releasing the two players.
Winnipeg has 20 players on its active roster, including 10 pitchers and 10 position players.
Coles, in his sixth season of independent baseball, was hitting .300 with three home runs, 43 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 72 games with the RailCats this season. Prior to joining Gary this year, he played three seasons with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. He has a .306 career batting average and .378 on-base percentage.
Allen, 27, has a 4-5 record this season with a 3.32 ERA in 31 games out of the bullpen. He has six saves and 38 strikeouts in 43.1 innings and has allowed just six walks this season. Allen played the previous four seasons in the Frontier League and Can-Am League.
