Goldeyes add pitcher, infielder
The Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball team has added an arm to its starting pitching rotation and signed an infielder.
Left-handed pitcher Fabian Williamson, 23, and infielder Kaohi Downing, 25, have been inked to deals with the Goldeyes for the 2012 American Association season brining the roster to 26 players including 13 pitchers and 13 position players.
Williamson played in the Oakland Athletics organization with Advanced-A Stockton of the California League and Double-A Midland of the Texas League last season. In 22 games between the two teams, which included 12 starts, Williamson had a 3-6 record with a 7.16 ERA.
"We like to have a balance in our rotation. Right now we have three right-handers and one left-hander, so this evens it out by adding another left-hander," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney in a statement. "We’re hopeful he can come in and earn a spot in the rotation. We expect big things from him."
Downing, who started his career as a pitcher in the San Francisco Giants system, played his first season as a position player last year. In 2011, he played 52 games with Short Season-A Salem-Keizer of the Northwest League where he hit .312 with a home run, 19 RBI and had 11 stolen bases.
