Goldeyes add two to roster
The Winnipeg Goldeyes announced their first free-agent pick-ups of the offseason today, as the club signed Canadian hurler David Hatt and catcher Matt Albaugh for 2014.
The 23-year-old Hatt, who grew up in Hamilton, just wrapped his college career with the NCAA Div. II Wilmington University Wildcats. In his senior year, he went 7-1 with a sparkling 2.08 ERA in 16 starts and 91 innings pitched, including a complete-game shutout. For this performance, Hatt was named the Central Atlantic College Conference pitcher of the year, and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association honoured him as East Region Pitcher of the Year.
In a release, Fish manager Rick Forney said the right-hander has "a little deception in his delivery." Hatt suited up for Team Canada at the World Baseball Challenge last summer, and helped drive the Medicine Hat Mavericks to the championship series of the Western Major Baseball League.
Catcher Albaugh, also 23, posted a .310 batting average during his four-year college career with the NCAA Div. II Kutztown University Golden Bears. Last season, he struck for .344 with a home run and 29 RBI in 44 games. He was also named to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division First Team for the second time in his career.
The Goldeyes now have three players under contract for the 2014 season, including two pitchers and one position player.
