Goldeyes blank St. Paul 3-0, pick up crucial win in wild card race
The Winnipeg Goldeyes are getting hot right when they need it the most.
After back-to-back 7-0 wins over the St. Paul Saints Tuesday and Wednesday, the Fish picked up their third straight victory, blanking the Saints 3-0 Thursday night at Midway Stadium in St. Paul. The Goldeyes win the four-game series 3-1 after starting off with a 14-1 loss.
And just like last night, the Wichita Wingnuts beat the Gary SouthShore Railcats Thursday, this time by a 5-4 margin. With Gary losing and Winnipeg winning, the Goldeyes are now just 1½ games back of the Railcats in the American Association's wild card race. The Railcats are 50-39 and the Goldeyes 49-41.
Recent acquisition Jason Jarvis was the latest pitcher to lead the Fish to victory. Like Matt Rusch Wednesday night and Chris Salamida Tuesday, Jarvis pitched a complete game in just his second start (and first win) for the Fish, giving up five hits in the process. The three helped set a new franchise record — it's the first time the Goldeyes have won three straight games in shutouts.
Leading 1-0, the Goldeyes got solo home runs in the fourth inning from both Josh Mazzola (who went four-for-four on the night) and Luis Alen. And while St. Paul pitcher Anthony Claggett threw a strong, complete game as well, it wasn't enough to keep his team in the mix.
The Goldeyes will hope the hot streak can continue in Sioux Falls, S.D., Friday night, as they open a three-game weekend series against the Canaries. The Fish then finish the regular season with a seven-game homestand, starting Tuesday: four games against the St. Paul Saints, followed by three against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
Friday night's game against the Canaries begins at 7 p.m., and can be heard on TSN 1290.
