A critical piece to the Winnipeg Goldeyes 2012 championship run has returned to Winnipeg for the last part of the regular season.
Goldeyes manager Rick Forney confirmed that Yurendell de Caster arrived in Winnipeg Friday night at 6:20 p.m. De Caster will be in the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Sioux Falls Canaries.
De Caster returns to Winnipeg after spending the season in the Mexican League playing AAA ball. His team, Acereros de Monclava, finished with a losing record of 53-57 and missed the playoffs, allowing him to return to the American Association.
The 33-year-old will fill the fifth and final veteran spot on the Goldeyes roster.
De Caster had a .327 batting average with the Goldeyes last season, with 112 hits and 68 RBIs. Even more important, de Caster was clutch in situational hitting last season — he hit .571 with the bases loaded including two grand slams and 15 RBIs.
