Goldeyes edge Explorers 8-7

Dexter Carter recorded his fourth save of the season and reliever Brian Beuning recorded the win on Tuesday night as the Winnipeg Goldeyes edged the Sioux City Explorers 8-7 at Shaw Park in front of 5,594 fans.

The Goldeyes (23-15) and the Explorers (18-22) will meet again today at 7 p.m. in the last game of this three-game set.

The Explorers jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the top of the third inning after two errors by Goldeyes starting pitcher Chris Salamida and a grand slam by Explorers right-fielder Peter Barrows.

The Goldeyes responded with three runs in the bottom of the third on Josh Mazzola’s RBI single and a two-run single by David Narodowski to tie the game 5-5.

After the Explorers scored one in the top of the fourth, Goldeyes first baseman Gabby Martinez hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot that gave the Goldeyes a 7-6 edge. After Brandon Newton’s RBI single for Sioux City in the top of the sixth, a single from Winnipeg's Jon Weber scored centre-fielder Chris Roberson for the 8-7 Winnipeg lead.

It was expected to be the last game for Beuning, who pitched four innings allowing one run on one hit and struck out four batters, as he will return to his job as a Minnesota state trooper.

Leading Winnipeg at the plate was Roberson, going 2-for-5 with a triple, a double and two RBI, catcher Luis Alen, who went 3-for-4 with a double and scored two runs, and Martinez, who had two hits including a home run and scored a pair of runs.
