By Ashley Prest
The Winnipeg Goldeyes ended their 2012 American Association baseball season on a losing note on Monday night at Shaw Park, dropping an 11-3 decision to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks before a crowd of 6,785.
Winnipeg (55-45) will now advance to the playoffs, where they will meet the RedHawks (65-35) in a best-of-five semifinal series that begins Wednesday and Thursday at Fargo's Newman Outdoor Field. The series will return to Shaw Park for the games on Friday (7 p.m.) and, if necessary, Saturday (6 p.m.) and Sunday (5 p.m.).
Winnipeg clinched the wild-card playoff berth with a 5-1 victory over the RedHawks on Saturday.
In Monday's game, the Goldeyes were led by shortstop Price Kendall who had four hits, including a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Goldeyes came within one run, trailing 4-3, after a third-inning home run by second baseman Yurendell de Caster, but the RedHawks were just getting started.
The RedHawks, who registered 15 hits, were unstoppable at the plate for a second straight night. Fargo scored one in the first, two in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth, three in the sixth and one in the eighth.
Leading Fargo was centre-fielder Nic Jackson with four doubles, with home runs from shortstop Zach Penprase and Ryan Stovall, the bottom-of-the-order hitter who had three hits and four RBI. Penprase scored three runs on just one hit.
Goldeyes' rookie pitcher Denver Wynn took the loss, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing eight runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Fargo starting pitcher Jake Laber picked up his seventh win of the season.
Fargo beat Winnipeg 15-1 on Sunday to win the three-game series.
The Goldeyes announced their players of the year with centre-fielder Chris Roberson and Josh Mazzola co-winners of the Budweiser Most Valuable Player Award, based on player-of-the-game selections by the media. Catcher Luis Alen was presented with the Rogers Player of the Year Award as voted by Goldeyes fans.
