The Winnipeg Goldeyes have yet to officially step on the field for training camp and yet changes are already in the works.
Fish manager Rick Forney announced Thursday that veteran infielders Rhyne Hughes and Yurendell de Caster have been placed on irrevocable waivers for the purpose of granting their unconditional release -- Hughes because of healthy problems, de Caster because he is once again starting the season playing in Mexico.
"It’s unfortunate for Rhyne that he can’t join our ball club, but his health is the No. 1 priority and we wish him a quick recovering," Forney said in a press release.
The Goldeyes now have 25 players on their training camp roster, including 14 pitchers and 11 position players.
The team’s annual open house takes place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Shaw Park. The players will take to the field at 11 a.m. to begin training camp and Saturday is also the first day individual tickets for the 2014 season go on sale.
