Goldeyes release pair of pitchers
The Winnipeg Goldeyes made their first moves to cut down their training-camp roster today, sending two players off for other horizons.
The first release of the 2013 season was rookie southpaw Reggie Hochstedler. The 23-year-old came to the Goldeyes straight from the NCAA and hoped to stick in the pros, but after rough outings from the mound in the Goldeyes’ pre-season tilts he was put on waivers today for the purpose of granting his release.
The team traded also right-handed pitcher Tim Griffin to the Quebec Capitales of the Can-Am League for future considerations.
Those moves leave the current Goldeyes roster at 24 players. Under American Association rules at least one more player must come off the roster before the season begins on Thursday. After the first 10 days of the season, the Goldeyes may only carry a maximum of 22 players.
The team is currently on the road after wrapping up two weekend exhibition games against the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks, which the Goldeyes split. The pre-season continues in Kansas on Tuesday and finishes with a game against the Wichita Winguts on Wednesday.
