Goldeyes sign club MVP Mazzola
The Winnipeg Goldeyes will have MVP Josh Mazzola back for another season.
Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the 27-year-old infielder had signed a new contract for 2014. The news is big for the Fish, as Mazzola has been the club’s MVP in each of his first two seasons in Winnipeg. Last season he hit .293 with a team-leading 16 home runs and 64 RBI while appearing in 100 games. And the man is dandy with the glove, too, having moved to shortstop midway through the season – a position he had never played before – as well as lining up at first, third and right and centre field.
"He’s been super productive for us for the two seasons that we’ve had him and I absolutely love his versatility, both offensively and defensively," Forney said in a press release. "I am not sure there are many players in this league that could play every position on the field, with the exception of catcher."
Over the last two years Mazzola has played in 198 games for the Goldeyes, hitting .300 career while hitting 34 home runs and driving in 138 runs.
Prior to coming in Winnipeg, Mazzola spent three seasons in the San Francisco Giants organization, after signing with the Giants as a free agent following his collegiate career at Missouri State.
The Goldeyes now have five players signed for the 2014 season, including three pitchers and two position players.
