Goldeyes sign rookie pitcher, release Osuna
The Winnipeg Goldeyes have added a pitcher from the college ranks and set their 22-man roster for Friday’s opening day of their 20th season.
Manager Rick Forney announced the signing of rookie right-hander Dan Martony today. Martony, 24, is a native of Goleta, Calif., who played three years of NCAA baseball with Division 1 Oral Roberts Golden Eagles, posting a 9-1 record.
Martony reached the NCAA national tournament three times during his career and in his final two seasons, posted an 8-0 record with 43 strikeouts to just 12 walks.
Today, the Goldeyes also said they have released left-handed pitcher Edgar Osuna and placed right-hander Justin Garcia and left-hander Pete Gehle on the inactive list. Garcia and Gehle will be activated for scheduled starts during the first week of the regular season, the team said.
Winnipeg’s roster includes 11 pitchers for opening day, which comes Friday in Grand Prairie, Texas against the Grand Prairie AirHogs.
The Goldeyes play another exhibition game tonight in Kansas City and wrap up their pre-season games with a contest Wednesday morning in Wichita.
