Goldeyes start road trip with loss to Explorers
For just the second time this season, the Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball team has lost two games in a row.
The Goldeyes opened a seven-game road swing Thursday with a 3-2 loss in Sioux City, Iowa, to the Explorers in front of a sparse crowd of 791.
The game was delayed for more than an hour by rain.
Goldeyes starting pitcher Chris Salamida took the loss after working 7 1/3 third innings and allowing all three Explorers runs.
Winnipeg (18-8) and Sioux City (14-14) will meet Friday in the second of their four-game series before heading to Sioux Falls, S.D., for three games.
Matt Rusch (3-0, 1.72) is expected to start Friday for Winnipeg against Sioux City's Alain Quijano (1-2, 2.63).
Sioux City scored single runs in the second, third and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead.
Goldeyes centre-fielder Chris Roberson scored his team's first run in the sixth inning after a single from infielder Yurendell de Caster. De Caster also drove in left-fielder Jon Weber for the second Goldeyes run in the eighth inning.
De Caster led the Goldeyes, going three-for-three with two RBI.
Jason Jarvis got the win for Sioux City while Chris Bodishbaugh pitched the ninth inning for his sixth save of the season.
The games can be heard on TSN 1290 radio with the pre-game show at 6:30 p.m. and the game at 7 p.m.
