Goldeyes trade Downing for Sioux City infielder Pineda
The Winnipeg Goldeyes have made a trade, aquiring infielder Ryan Pineda from the Sioux City Explorers in exchange for pitcher Kaohi Downing.
Pineda split his time last season between the Grand Prairie Airhogs and Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks, hitting .288 -- with 6 HR and 49 RBI -- in 95 American Association games.
Pineda played every infield position except first base in 2013 and also saw playing time in left field.
"We got to see him a little bit during training camp last year when we were playing the RedHawks and I really liked the way he played against us," Goldeyes manager Rick Forney said in a statement released Wednesday. "He swung the bat really well. He has the potential to be a young impact bat and, in the right situation, be a 20 doubles and 10 home runs type of guy. He’s a guy that has a lot of value."
Pineda -- a 28th round pick by the Oakland Athletics in 2010 -- is well-travelled lately. After starting the 2013 season with Fargo, Pineda finished up the year with Grand Prairie, who then shipped him back to Fargo at season’s end. Fargo then shipped him to Sioux City, who in turn shipped him to Winnipeg in exchange for Downing.
Downing, 27, spent the last two seasons in the Goldeyes bullpen, going 8-6 with a 3.97 ERA in 79 appearances.
