Goldeyes trade Ott; pick up Leach, Carr
The Winnipeg Goldeyes traded the contract of infielder/catcher Louis Ott to the Kansas City T-Bones for future considerations on Wednesday and acquired pitchers Nick Carr and Brian Leach.
Goldeyes manager Rick Forney has signed Leach, a 26-year-old relief pitcher who played the past four seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, and obtained the contract for Carr, 25, in a trade with the Lorado Lemurs for a player to be named later.
Ott, who was the player who committed the throwing error that ended Game 5 in the semifinal series against St. Paul Saints last season, had been re-signed by the Goldeyes on on Feb. 22. Ott was expected to play a versatile role for the Goldeyes this season.
Goldeyes manager Rick Forney said Ott’s trade was just about roster numbers.
"We just don’t have room to give Ott the amount of at-bats he needs to play every day and be happy," Forney said in a statement.
Ott, 27, was acquired from the Gary SouthShore RailCats early last season and played 94 games with the Goldeyes last season, hitting .325 with five home runs and 38 RBI.
Leach has played the last four seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He had a 7.93 ERA in 32 games between Advanced-A Bradenton of the Florida State League and Double-A Altoona of the Eastern League.
"Leach was a high prospect in the Pirates organization at one time," Forney said. "He has a low to mid 90s fastball and an explosive arm. We are going to try to pitch him in an eighth inning area."
Carr, who played in the New York Mets system for the past six seasons, played in 22 games with St. Lucie of the Florida State League with a 2.27 ERA.
The Goldeyes now have 24 players signed for the 2012 season, including 12 pitchers and 12 position players.
