Goldeyes trim roster ahead of season start
The Winnipeg Goldeyes made two roster moves Tuesday, trimming their roster down to 22 players in preparation for the start of the season.
The Fish placed outfielder Dan Barbero on the inactive list and placed left-handed pitcher Matt Fairel on irrevocable waivers. Under American Association rules, Barbero can be activated at any point of the season.
Fairel, who was acquired from the New Jersey Jackels of the Can-Am League Monday, chose not to report to Winnipeg and is now available to the other 13 clubs for the next 24 hours. If no American Association team puts in a claim for Fairel, he will be released.
The Goldeyes start season with 22 players, evenly split with 11 pitchers and 11 position players. American Association rosters allow for a maximum of 23 players.
Winnipeg finishes off its preseason schedule with a seven-inning game in Kansas City tonight (8 p.m., TSN 1290). The club opens the regular season Friday, when they visit the Amarillo Sox for the start of the three-game series.
