Goldeyes win 7-0 in St. Paul... again
Gain ground on RailCats for wild card spot
Different night, same opponent, same result.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes blanked the St. Paul Saints 7-0 for the second straight night at Midway Stadium Wednesday, led by pitcher Matt Rusch's complete-game shutout — the second of his career.
Wednesday's road win made for the first time the Goldeyes posted consecutive shutouts in nearly a decade.
Once again, a strong start from the Goldeyes helped a great deal, in this case a five-run second inning that saw all nine batters take the plate. Combined with Rusch's strong pitching — he allowed just three hits in the game — the Saints were never able to fight their way back into the game.
Rusch has been strong on the road this season. He's now 5-0 with a 2.38 ERA away from Shaw Park.
The win is timely for the Fish. The Gary SouthShore Railcats lost to the Wichita Wingnuts, meaning the Goldeyes gained a game on the RailCats for the American Association's wild card race. After Wednesday night's games, the Goldeyes are 2½ games back.
The Goldeyes and Saints square off again Thursday at 7 p.m. at Midway Stadium in the third of the four-game series.
