Hot start propels Goldeyes to victory
The bats were smoking hot early on and the Winnipeg Goldeyes took full advantage, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after two innings en route to a 9-3 thrashing of the Sioux City Explorers Tuesday.
Winnipeg scored twice in the opening inning, courtesy of RBI hits by Yurendell de Caster and Ray Sadler.
Luis Alen expanded the lead in the second when he came home on an error by Explorers third baseman Jeff Squier, his second error of the inning. Sadler and Josh Mazzola hit back-to-back, bases-loaded singles with two outs to bring the Goldeyes lead to seven. That would cap a five-run, five-hit inning for the Fish.
Explorers starter Jason Jarvis gave up 14 hits and nine runs in five and a third innings. Last week in Winnipeg, Jarvis gave up 11 runs in less than four innings of work.
Sadler’s second double of the game brought home one of the two runs scored by the Goldeyes in the fourth inning to make it 9-0.
Goldeyes starter Matt Jackson picked up his second win as a member of the Goldeyes. He worked eight innings.
Winnipeg is now within 2½ games of the wild card as the Gary SouthShore RailCats, holders of the final American Association playoff spot, had their game with the Wichita Wingnuts postponed due to rain.
Game three of this four-game Goldeyes-Explorers series goes Wednesday at 7 p.m.
