Mazzola delivers in Goldeyes' 5-4 win over St. Paul
Winnipeg Goldeyes first baseman Josh Mazzola hit a walk-off home run for a 5-4 win over the St. Paul Saints on Thursday night at Shaw Park for Winnipeg’s fifth straight win. Mazzola drove in three other runs with a first-inning double.
The Goldeyes (31-20), first in the North division, and St. Paul (23-27) will meet again Friday at 7 p.m. in the second of their four-game set at Shaw Park. It will be the 10th game in a 12-game homestand. Todd Privett (2-3, 4.41 ERA) is expect to start for Winnipeg; St. Paul's pitcher has not been announced.
Before the game, Goldeyes manager Rick Forney added infielder Jose Duran after claiming the 25-year-old off waivers from the Kansas City T-Bones, and put right-handed pitcher Stephen Kahn on irrevocable waivers. Duran was hitting .302 with the T-Bones.
The Goldeyes opened Thursday’s game with four runs in the first inning after an RBI single by designated hitter Kyle Day, followed by Mazzola’s three-run double.
In the top of the second, the Saints got a two-run home run by first baseman Miles Durham and got a solo homer in the top of the third from right-fielder Jose Hernandez to come within one at 4-3.
The Saints tied the game in the top of the ninth after Winnipeg closer Dexter Carter walked leadoff batter Tanner Townsend, who stole second, got third on a sacrifice hit and then scored on a wild pitch.
The Goldeyes had just six hits on the night, with two coming in the eighth and ninth innings. Mazzola had two, with singles from Price Kendall, Jon Weber, Yurendell de Caster and Day.
The Saints hit four doubles and two home runs. Carter (1-2) got the win for Winnipeg while Reid Mahon (3-5) took the loss.
