Goldeyes add familiar face in Lentini for season's stretch run
THE first-place Fish are beefing up for the home stretch.
Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced the signing Tuesday of familiar face Fehlandt Lentini.
The 33-year-old outfielder played three seasons for Winnipeg (47-33) from 2006-2008 where he posted a .315 average.
He also recorded 95 doubles in that span, which is tied for the franchise lead with Max Poulin, as well as 28 triples, good for second all time.
For a team with high playoff hopes, adding experience is always top of the priority list, and in re-signing Lentini, the Goldeyes get back their all-time leader in at bats (420), runs (93), triples (13) and stolen bases (57).
The Santa Rose, Calif., product played in the Golden Baseball League for the 2009 and 2010 seasons before signing with the Amarillo Sox of the American Association this year. He was released Monday by the 38-44 Sox, who are 13.5 games out of a playoff spot in the South Division.
In 71 games with the Sox this year, Lentini hit .324 with 56 RBI as well as four homers.
The Fish's latest addition played three years in the Houston Astros minor league system after the team signed him as a free agent in 2001, including a stint in double-A in 2003.
