Goldeyes could clinch North Division at home

  • Print

FOR the Goldeyes, this series could be huge. True, it's not exactly a high-tension match-up; the Canaries, 30-58 on the season as of Wednesday, are far out of playoff contention. There is a chance the Fish could clinch the North Division championship this series, and in front of a home crowd, too.

The Goldeyes cranked up the heat at the end of the season, recovering from a losing series against the dominant Wichita Wingnuts to sweep the St. Paul Saints, then win a road series against the Canaries and a home stretch against the New Jersey Jackals. To do it, they got plenty of authoritative pitching, and hot batting from throughout the lineup: by Wednesday afternoon, seven of the Fish's nine regular hitters batted over .300 through their previous 10 tilts.

The Canaries just don't have the same team firepower, although first-baseman A.J. Kirby-Jones has been swinging well down this stretch and can really hammer home runs if he gets a chance -- he has hit 21 out this season.
