GOLDEYES - 1 REDHAWKS - 9
Shaw Park was dried from the downpour which forced the Fish to turn a scheduled Friday-night game into the first of a Saturday evening double-header.
Still, the Fish's performance in the first of two seven-inning tilts against the visiting Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks came up a little soggy. The game started well enough, when first baseman Casey Haerther slammed a home-run off the right-field foul pole in the second inning to give the Fish an early lead. The Fish and 'Hawks traded quick outs for two more innings, but in the fifth the RedHawks offense leaped to life, notching four hits against Goldeyes starting pitcher Matt Rusch and cashing in for three runs. Things just went downhill from there for the Fish, who couldn't seem to get anything going in response.
GAMEBREAKERS At the top of the order, RedHawks shortstop Zach Penprase kept the visitors flying, wrapping up with three hits on four tries for three RBI, and a run of his own.
A tip o' the hat to RedHawks starting pitcher Taylor Stanton, who kept the Goldeyes offense mostly mired in strikes and quick outs. He threw all seven scheduled innings, allowing just four hits and a run.
The Fish were still in the game in the sixth -- albeit down 3-1 -- and staring at two outs on the scoreboard when 'Hawks outfielder Buddy Sosnoskie thwacked a ball down center field. The Fish should have closed it out there, but the ball skidded past Fish shortstop Nate Samson's hand. The error allowed the 'Hawks to load the bases -- reliever Allen Caldwell had walked two batters --and Penprase's ensuing single let two run home.
Casey Haerther, pinch pitcher: after a sloppy seventh inning that saw the Fish give up four runs and walk four batters in a row, manager Rick Forney took Haerther off first-base duty and put him on the mound for his professional pitching debut. His first throw, to RedHawks outfielder Tim Alberts, led to an easy fly-out to right field to close off the top of the inning.
