Party at the park for Goldeyes tonight

WICHITA, Kan. -- The 2012 American Association champion Winnipeg Goldeyes are planning a victory celebration tonight at Shaw Park beginning at 6 p.m.

Team officials said doors will open for the event at 5:30 p.m.

The Goldeyes won the league championship in Wichita on Friday night with an 8-3 win over the Wingnuts in the third game to sweep the best-of-five final series.

It was the first time since 1994 the Goldeyes won a league title. It is also the first championship for a professional sports team in Winnipeg since then.

"It is open to everyone, we want families to come down, there will be no charge. We want everyone to come down to pay tribute to the players and share in the celebration," said Dan Chase, Goldeyes director of sales and marketing in a telephone interview.

"Our fans mean everything to us and the way it worked out (with the Goldeyes winning on the road), not many of them were able to see the championship so we want to bring the championship to them."

A number of players, and manager Rick Forney, headed straight from Wichita to their respective homes but Chase said there will be about 10 players, maybe more, on hand to do a meet-and-greet with fans after the formal part of the program.

Goldeyes president Sam Katz and general manager Andrew Collier will be in attendance for a presentation of the league trophy.

Players expected to be in attendance include third baseman Amos Ramon and pitcher Matt Rusch, both of whom live in Winnipeg, as well as pitchers Ace Walker and Zach Baldwin among others.
