WINNIPEG Goldeyes infielder Price Kendall's day off lasted less than two innings on Tuesday night at Shaw Park.
Kendall started the night in the dugout to rest his sore leg, which would have been his first night off after 74 straight games, but was back in action in the bottom of the second as the Goldeyes (44-31) recorded an 8-2 win over the Sioux Falls Pheasants (34-42).
A crowd of 5,045 saw Goldeyes shortstop Jose Duran leave the game with an apparent leg injury in the second after hitting a double. He was replaced by Kendall, who finished the game at shortstop going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Matt Rusch (8-2) pitched the first complete game this season by a Goldeyes hurler, allowing two runs on five hits. With the victory, the Goldeyes won their 14th series of the season and have a four-game lead on the Kansas City T-Bones for the wild-card playoff berth.
The Goldeyes and the Pheasants meet again tonight at 7 p.m. in the last game of the three-game series. Expected starting pitchers are southpaw Todd Privett (5-4, 3.47) for Winnipeg and lefty Mitchell Clegg (6-5, 5.61) for Sioux Falls.
The Goldeyes lit up Pheasants starter and former Goldeye Barry Fowler (1-1) -- who took the loss -- for five runs in the second inning. Amos Ramon's bases-loaded single scored a pair of runs, catcher Kyle Day scored on Duran's double and Kendall scored after pinch-running for the injured Duran. Winnipeg left-fielder Mike Coles was driven in by centre-fielder Chris Roberson's single, but Roberson was caught in a rundown to end the inning with Winnipeg leading 5-0.
Sioux Falls got on the board in the top of the third inning with a two-run double by first baseman Jared Bolden.
Winnipeg's Yurendell de Caster, playing second base, scored a run in the bottom of the third. In the fourth Roberson was driven in on a double by designated hitter Jon Weber, for a 7-2 lead.
Kendall scored Winnipeg's last run of the game in the sixth inning.
