Rookie taking his best shot
WINNIPEG Goldeyes rookie Dan Barbero was brought off the inactive list and got his first start for the Goldeyes in Tuesday's home opener of the 2012 American Association season against the Amarillo Sox.
Barbero, who had travelled with the team for the nine-game, season-opening road trip through Texas but did not play, finally got the chance he was waiting for. On Tuesday, he started in left field in place of veteran Jon Weber who is serving a two-game suspension.
Weber and first baseman Yurendell de Caster (one game) were suspended by the league for their role in an altercation that took place in the eighth inning of Saturday's (14-7) loss to the Diablos in El Paso. Both were dressed and in the dugout with the team.
Barbero is getting his best shot at earning a job as a result of the suspensions. Manager Rick Forney said Barbero could also spell off Luis Alen at catcher on Wednesday or Thursday.
David Narodowski, a versatile infielder, served as the designated hitter.
"It's their time to shine, make the most of it. We're going to have to do something here to trim the roster back," Forney said. "Can't keep everybody, unfortunately. Make the most of the opportunity. (They) probably wouldn't have had this opportunity (if not for the suspensions)."
The Goldeyes have 22 players on the roster, which is the league limit. Catcher/outfielder Kyle Day was placed on the disabled list on Tuesday retroactive to May 20 when he hurt his hamstring in Amarillo rounding first on a double.

There was no batting practice for either team on home-opening day as the field was too wet.

The Goldeyes introduced a new friend for mascot Goldie, a female companion and dance partner named Goldette. She resembles Goldie with the addition of a red dress and blonde ponytail.
