Want Fish on your plate?
Goldeyes join Blue, Jets with special tags
The Winnipeg Goldeyes ran away with the Northern League trophy last year -- and now, they're ready to drive away with a new set of hardware to celebrate the win.
On Friday, the province and the Winnipeg Goldeyes announced starting today, Manitobans can purchase a new Goldeyes license plate in commemmoration of the team's 2012 championship and its upcoming 20th anniversary.
The plates are tinged with the Goldeyes' signature gold colour, and feature the Fish logo, a baseball and blue lettering. The plates will cost $70, and $30 from each plate sold will go to the Goldeyes' Field of Dreams Foundation.
Applications for the plates will be available starting today at all Autopac locations. "We're ecstatic about it, for our fans and our foundation," Goldeyes general manager Andrew Collier said. "It's going to look great all over Winnipeg and Manitoba. The more we can get our name out there can only mean good things for the franchise."
Collier said he wants plate No. 94 in the limited-edition run -- the same year the Goldeyes franchise (formerly the Rochester Aces) moved to Winnipeg, and his first year with the team.
The Fish plates come off the succcess of the Blue Bombers and Winnipeg Jets plates. The Bombers sold out its run of 8,100 in less than two months in 2011. And the Jets plates? More than 21,000 of them sold after a frenzied release later that year.
In order to qualify for the province's specialty license plate program, organizations must convince the province they can sell at least 2,000 plates. The Goldeyes should have no problem with that, MPI minister Andrew Swan said.
"I think there's still a pent-up demand for (the Jets plates), so why not a Goldeyes plate as well?" Swan said at a press conference at Shaw Park Friday. "We get a lot of pride out of our sports teams, and we have very, very passionate fans."
