Weber, de Caster will be watching from stands

WINNIPEG Goldeyes veterans Jon Weber and Yurendell de Caster will miss today's home opener at Shaw Park as the two will be serving suspensions handed down Monday by the American Association.

The Goldeyes (6-3) will open the home schedule tonight at 7 p.m. against the Amarillo Sox in the first of a three-game set.

Weber, the team's left-fielder/designated hitter, received a two-game suspension while de Caster, the first baseman, will miss one game.

The two were involved in what the team is referring to as "an altercation" during last Saturday's 14-7 loss to the Diablos in El Paso which erupted in the eighth inning after Weber became the fourth Goldeyes batter to be hit by a pitch.

"It sucks. I'm pretty disappointed about that," Weber said. "I was really hoping I could open up the season at home in front of these great fans. But things happen in baseball, I have no control over it, so I'll just wear it like a man and be ready to play in Game 3 (against Amarillo)."

Weber, a team leader in the clubhouse and on the field, said batters being hit by pitches are just a part of the game. Regardless, the Goldeyes sent a message they're going to be tough to beat in any aspect of the game.

"Something had to be done, absolutely," said Weber. "I should have handled it different, but when the emotions in the game and everything gets involved, I handled it differently. I made my bed, now I've got to lay in it."
