Mariners held to Kyle Seager's single by Josh Tomlin in 5-0 loss to Indians

SEATTLE - Mariners starter Roenis Elias picked a bad night to struggle with his command.

Josh Tomlin was in complete control for Cleveland, throwing a one-hitter and striking out a career-high 11 in the Indians' 5-0 victory Saturday night

The Indians' right-hander was in complete control in baffling the Mariners, who only mustered Kyle Seager's leadoff single in the fifth inning.

"The stars just didn't line up for us tonight in a lot of different ways. Their guy threw a pretty nice ball game," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "... He threw strikes, worked fast in and out, up and down, changed speeds. He did a nice job."

Tomlin (5-5) didn't walk a batter and Seager's fifth inning single was the only blemish on his evening. It was just the second complete game of Tomlin's career and the first one-hitter by a Cleveland pitcher since Billy Traber did it against the Yankees on July 8, 2003.

The Mariners also dug an early hole they couldn't get out of. Elias (7-6) struggled early and gave up a pair of runs in the first inning that left Seattle chasing the rest of the night.

"He didn't really have command, particularly on the fastball," McClendon said. "No command of the breaking ball. One of those where it was just a bad night all the way around and they out played us in every facet of the game."

Asdrubal Cabrera doubled and scored on a single from Michael Brantley.

Brantley advanced to second on the throw home and scored on a double by Carlos Santana to give the Indians a 2-0 lead.

Mike Aviles singled with one out in the fifth and came around to score on Michael Bourn's double. A balk by Elias moved Bourn to third and Cabrera's sacrifice fly scored Bourn to give the Indians a 4-0 lead.

Yan Gomes homered off Elias in the sixth inning to extend Cleveland's lead to 5-0.

"It was just a bad outing," Elias said through a translator. "They got me early on and late. It happens in baseball. You make good pitches and they still hit them."

Meanwhile, the Mariners couldn't solve Tomlin.

Seager singled to lead off the fifth and took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third when the throw from catcher Yan Gomes sailed into centre field. He was left stranded as Michael Saunders struck out looking to retire the side.

"He was throwing a lot of different pitches and all of them were in or right near the zone," Seager said. "He was really good tonight."

While McClendon tipped his cap to Tomlin's performance, he was still less-than-thrilled with the quality of their chances against Tomlin Saturday night.

"Our at-bats were not at-bats we want to talk about," McClendon said. "We want to forget about them. It was one of those nights."
