Mark Teahan has 3 hits and Diamondbacks topple Indians 7-5

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Mark Teahan paced the offence and Patrick Corbin was strong on the mound for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Teahan went 3 for 3 with three runs scored and the Diamondbacks earned a 7-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Friday.

Corbin allowed two runs and three hits in five innings. He lost his command in the third inning, walking three and allowing a two-run single to Michael Brantley, but shut down the Indians on one hit in his last two innings in his longest outing of the spring.

Corbin likes his chances of getting a spot in the Diamondbacks rotation in spite of his wild inning.

"In the third inning I was rushing a little bit. I probably got a little tired," Corbin said. "I can usually correct that. I didn't correct it as quick as I normally do. After that I had two good innings. My goal now is to get ready for the season. I feel I've done everything they've asked. I feel that if they pick me for that spot I can go out there and compete."

The Indians' Justin Masterson pitched five innings. He allowed five runs, but only one earned. The Indians' infield committed two errors. Masterson gave up four hits and three walks but struck out seven.

The Indians' opening day starter wasn't as sharp either, but is getting close to being ready for the opener in Toronto April 2.

"I thought Masterson was fighting his two-seamer a little bit," manager Terry Francona said. "That's not the worst thing. We have him stretched out to almost 100 pitches. That's good now we can back him off his next outing."

The Indians ran themselves out of the third inning.

"We made a couple errors and ran ourselves out of an inning," Francona said. "That's what spring training is for. We need to tighten those things up in the next week. We had a lot of good things."

Joe Smith pitched in back-to-back games.

"We saw Brantley get some back-to-back at-bats. We'll see more of that the last two weeks," the Indians first-year manager said.

Mark Reynolds hit a two-run homer off Arizona's David Hernandez. It was his third of the spring and his longest.

"That was impressive," Francona said. "I heard rumours that it went over the scoreboard. I lost it. That's what he's here for. When he takes that swing and stays through the ball he gets that backspin. He's also hit some balls to right field. We're not trying to get him to go that way, but when he stays balanced it puts him in position to do that."

Arizona announced before the game that outfielder Adam Eaton will miss approximately two months with a sprained left elbow.

NOTES: Indians pitchers Justin Masterson and Joe Smith pitched on their birthday. ... Indians infielder Jason Kipnis remains out with soreness in his right elbow. ... RHP Chris Perez is scheduled to pitch a minor league game on Saturday. He has been out since Feb. 26 with a strained right shoulder.
