Red Sox draft 2 18-year-old high-schoolers, IF Michael Chavis and RHP Michael Kopech

  • Print

BOSTON - The Boston Red Sox have chosen two high school infielders in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft.

Michael Chavis, an 18-year-old shortstop at Sprayberry High School in Georgia, was taken with the 26th pick.

He hit .580 with 13 homers in 28 games as a senior. Chavis is committed to attend Clemson but could bypass college and turn pro.

Boston also picked 18-year-old right-hander Michael Kopech from Mount Pleasant High School in Texas. He was chosen with the 33rd selection that was obtained from the New York Yankees as compensation for signing free agent centre fielder Jacoby Ellsbury. Kopech had a 0.44 ERA in 64 innings this season.

The first two rounds of the three-day draft were held Thursday night.
