Valley City ends U.S. dry spell
THE Valley City State Vikings became the first American team since 1968 to win the championship title as the North Dakota team defeated the Brandon Bobcats 90-58 at the 45th annual Wesmen Classic university men’s basketball tournament on Friday at the Duckworth Centre.
The last American team to win the Wesmen Classic was Bismarck Junior College.
Valley City guard Sekani Milligen, who scored 25 points in the final, was named the tournament MVP.
The host Winnipeg Wesmen won the third-place game Friday afternoon, defeating the UBC Okanagan Heat from Kelowna 82-49. Leading Winnipeg was Mark McNee with 21 points and Travis Krahn with 14 points. The Manitoba Bisons won the consolation championship on Friday morning with a 91-69 win over the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves. Manitoba’s Yigit Ozsayiner scored 16 points and was named player of the game.
In the championship game, Brandon was led by Emerick Ravier with 14 points, along with eight points each from Ilarion Bonhomme and Jordan Reaves.
The all-star team included Winnipeg’s Andrew Cunningham, Brandon’s Kyle Vince and Ravier, Winnipeg’s Eric Zimmerman and Valley City’s Aaron Duske.
