LAS VEGAS - Georges St. Pierre's strategy against B.J. Penn was simple.

"We wanted to discourage him and then drown him in the later rounds," explained trainer Firas Zahabi.

LAS VEGAS - The UFC has confirmed UFC 97 will take place April 18 in Montreal, with middleweight champion Anderson Silva taking on Thales Leites and former light-heavyweight title-holder Chuck (The Iceman) Liddell facing off against Mauricio (Shogun) Rua.

The mixed martial arts card at the Bell Centre is the UFC's second in Canada, following UFC 83 last April.

LAS VEGAS - Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre dominated lightweight title-holder B.J. (The Prodigy) Penn on Saturday night, winning by technical knockout when a battered Penn was saved further punishment after four rounds of their marquee mixed martial arts matchup at UFC 94.

LAS VEGAS - Georges St. Pierre knows how to handle himself in the cage but the mixed martial arts star says fighting in hockey is a whole different matter.

St. Pierre, who supports the Edmonton Oilers, is a big hockey buff and counts Montreal Canadiens enforcer Georges Laraque among his friends.

LAS VEGAS - The take on George St. Pierre's last opponent, Jon Fitch, was that while Fitch was good, St. Pierre was better.

"I think honestly that I'm better than he is in every single aspect of the game," the UFC welterweight champion said before proving it in a lopsided five-round decision at UFC 87.

LAS VEGAS - Thiago Silva has finished all 13 of the opponents he has faced, marking victories with a throat-slitting gesture aimed at the camera.

So what does opponent Lyoto (The Dragon) Machida, also 13-0, think of Silva's trademark celebration?

LAS VEGAS - When UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre steps into the cage Saturday night at UFC 94, he will be on his own against lightweight title-holder B.J. Penn. But the 27-year-old from Montreal has been prepared for months by a well-knit crew.

Team GSP has more coaches than your average CFL franchise.

LAS VEGAS - The Ultimate Fighting Championship has signed deals with two of its top fighters to give them signature gyms in a chain of fitness clubs planned by the mixed martial arts league.

UFC President Dana White said Thursday that the gyms will be named for B.J. Penn and Georges St. Pierre, scheduled to fight Saturday in Las Vegas for the UFC welterweight title.

LAS VEGAS - Georges St. Pierre and B.J. Penn both talked of legacy and the desire to be known as the best fighter in the world. But Penn pointed to a more basic motivation driving him ahead of Saturday's showdown at UFC 94.

"I just want to kick his ass," the Hawaiian fighter said Wednesday at the pre-fight news conference.

Last year was one to forget for Karo (The Heat) Parisyan.

The veteran welterweight lost his lone outing to 170-pound powerhouse Thiago Alves, was diagnosed with panic attacks and had to drop out of a scheduled UFC 88 bout with Yoshiyuki Yoshida because of a sciatic nerve damage.

Despite a knee injury that sidelined him all of last year, Stephan (The American Psycho) Bonnar did manage to get in some fighting in 2008.

The light-heavyweight mixed martial artist tried his hand at acting in "Ultimate Champion," a yet-to-be-released movie that showcases Bonnar both as a lover and a fighter judging from the trailer (www.ultimatechampionmovie.com).

UFC middleweight Amir Sadollah has had to pull out of a fight for the second time in less than three months due to injury.

Jon Fitch's last fight left him battered and bloodied, in needed of repair work. Five rounds with UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will do that.

Stitches took care of the cuts. The bruises faded. And the lumps went away.

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Fedor Emelianenko added to his heavyweight mystique Saturday night, stopping former UFC champion Andrei (The Pit Bull) Arlovski with one punch in the first round at the "Affliction: Day of Reckoning" mixed martial arts card at the Honda Center.

The six-foot-four Arlovski seemed to be having the early edge in the standup game, frustrating the Russian with punches and kicks. but then it turned on one blow. Arlovski drove Emelianenko back with a kick in the corner and then tried to follow it up with a flying knee, only to be floored by a right hand to the chin at three minutes 14 seconds.
