VANCOUVER, B.C. - Canada's Kaitlyn Lawes kicked off the world junior curling championship by defeating Denmark's Mette de Neergaard 10-2 on Thursday.
"We're very pleased with the start," said Winnipeg's Lawes - last year's bronze medallist.
"It means so much to me, playing in Canada as opposed to somewhere else. It's a dream come true. It's a gorgeous facility."
Scotland's Eve Muirhead defeated France's Marie Coulot 11-2 in eight ends in the other opening match. Scotland and Canada lock horns later Thursday.
"I'm looking forward to it," said Lawes.
In other opening draw action, Switzerland's Martina Bauman walloped Anna Kubeskova of the Czech Republic 10-2, and Alexandra Carlson of the U.S. stole a 9-8 win over Japan's Satsuki Fujisawa.
