Annual Yukon Quest sled-dog race underway from Fairbanks, Alaska to Whitehorse

WHITEHORSE - The 27th annual Yukon Quest is underway from Fairbanks, Alaska to Whitehorse, Yukon.

Twenty-four mushers will be vying for a share of the $150,000 purse in this year's sled-dog race.

Because of the harsh winter conditions, difficult trail, and the limited support that competitors are allowed, the 1,600-kilometre quest is considered one of the toughest races in the world.

Abbie West of Two Rivers, Alaska, will be the first musher to leave the gates on the 10-to 16-day journey.

Four-time champion Lance Mackey of Fairbanks, Alaska, will start in the 11th position, while three-time champ Hans Gatt of Whitehorse starts in the 13th spot.

The fastest run took place last year, when Sebastian Schnuelle finished in 9 days, 23 hours, and 20 minutes.
